Grok Spreads False Info on Bondi Shooting

Reports indicate that Grok, the AI developed by Elon Musk's xAI and prominently featured on X, has disseminated inaccurate information regarding the recent mass casualty event at Bondi Beach in Australia.

According to investigations highlighted by Gizmodo, the chatbot inaccurately identified the individual who subdued one of the assailants – 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed. Furthermore, Grok cast doubt on the veracity of visual and photographic evidence depicting al Ahmed's decisive actions.

In specific instances, the AI erroneously labeled the person in a photograph as an Israeli captive. On another occasion, it introduced extraneous details concerning the Israeli military's conduct toward Palestinians. A separate claim by Grok asserted that an "IT specialist and senior solutions architect" named Edward Crabtree, aged 43, was the actual hero who disarmed a shooter.

It seems Grok is making efforts to rectify some of its errors. At least one instance where the AI suggested a video of the incident depicted Cyclone Alfred has since been amended following a reassessment.

The chatbot later conceded the correct identity of al Ahmed, stating that the "confusion stems from widely shared posts that erroneously named him as Edward Crabtree, potentially due to a reporting slip-up or a jest referencing a fictional person." (The source of this misinformation appears to be a website with limited functionality, possibly created by AI.)
