Canadian Grand Prix to Shift to May for 2026 Season

The official announcement from Formula 1 states that, due to the anticipated partnership with Miami, the Canadian Grand Prix will undergo a rescheduling to occur at an earlier date on the calendar starting in the year 2026. This adjustment aims to streamline and improve the overall scheduling process.
Formula 1 announced that the Montreal race will be moved from mid-June to the third or fourth weekend of May each year.
The decision to take action is a consequence of the recent announcement that, within the framework of the contract renewal until 2031, the Monaco Grand Prix will be relocated from its customary time slot at the conclusion of May to the initial weekend of June, commencing in 2026.
It was anticipated that this circumstance would generate a prospect for the Montreal race, which is also scheduled until 2031, to progress and achieve greater coherence with the Miami event, traditionally held in early May since 2022.
Prior to embarking on the journey to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, countries situated in the Middle East, the commencement of the season in the year 2025 will be initiated by embarking on an Oceania-Asia segment from Australia, progressing towards Japan while passing through China.
Due to Ramadan scheduling, the final two races, which traditionally kick off the season, have been rescheduled for later in 2025.
A Miami-Canada leg would result in the elimination of a troublesome independent Atlantic crossing for all teams originating from their European headquarters and would set up a unified Europe season during the summer months across the whole continent, regardless of whether they decide to restart the season in 2026.
These changes encompass Qatar's integration with Abu Dhabi in 2023, transitioning from its previous independent status. In contrast, Baku will be departing from this trend, while Japan will deviate from its traditionally held end-of-season position by transitioning towards the beginning.
Concerns about the possible effects of bad weather, which is marked by freezing temperatures and a lot of rain in the area, have been raised by past proposals that call for the Montreal race to be moved earlier in the year and synchronized with Miami.
Given that the Grand Prix is held on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, it is extremely improbable that the proposed date for the 2026 Canada event will fall in early May. The accessibility needed to build up the relevant infrastructure is limited by this geographic restriction.
